Significant Woodlands

The Township of Augusta is undertaking a review of their Official Plan. Since the drafting of the last Official Plan the Province has issued a new Provincial Policy Statement that all municipal authories must be consistent with when making planning decisions. Section 2.0 of the new Provincial Policy Statement outlines and directs the Wise Use of Management of Resources. This includes policies pertaining to Natural Heritage including significant wetlands, areas of natural and scientific interest, fish habitat, significant valleylands and significant woodlands. The Province has developed new mapping for areas they consider as significant woodlands. According to Provincial Policy development within a Significant Woodlot may occur provide that ecological value of the woodlot is protected. A copy of this mapping can be viewed at the Municipal Office in Maynard during normal business hours or is available on the website at www.augusta.ca. Provincal staff note that the mapping is based upon the most up to date information they have but stress that specific property by property assessments were not undertaken. Both Provincial and Municipal staff are requesting that citizens review the suggested mapping and provide comments to them in order to ensure as much accuracy as possible.
