The village of Maitland

Maitland, with its distinctive boast of being the second oldest continuously-inhabited community in Upper Canada , enjoys a rich history dating to the times of British colonialism. A community of approximately 1200 residents, it is located about 5 Km east of the city of Brockville , in Ontario , along the shores of the Saint Lawrence River in the township of Augusta . Today the village is home to Invista Canada , Nitrochem, Prax-Air, Ultramar Maitland Terminal and is served by its own post office, fire hall and a convenience store. Maitland Recreation In addition to having a Recreation centre and ball field, Maitland Trails provides some of the best cross-country skiing is Eastern Ontario . Trails stretch from the Maitland Road on the east to the west side of the former Grenville Christian College trails. Maitland Trails operates as a members-only club; non-members can pay a fee per outing on the honor system. All of the trails in the area are ideal for family groups and great practice for more advanced skiers.

Maitland Churches

Two churches serve the spiritual needs of the Maitland community and beyond; the St. James Anglican Church, located on the west side of Church Street was completed in 1827. Sunday services are at 8:00 and 11:00 A.M. A historic plaque was erected on July 25, 1971 to commemorate the age and importance of this old church.

The Maitland Community Reformed Church, on County Road 2 just west of Wood Street , was built in 1955 by Dutch immigrant families who had settled in the area. The church has an active Sunday school and there are two Reformed Church Women's groups. Their work includes Bible study, visiting the sick and shut-ins, and raising money for missions.

Maitland Cemeteries

There are two cemeteries associated with the village of Maitland , the St. James Anglican Cemetery located on Church Street . This picturesque cemetery fills the churchyard and holds the tombstones of many of Maitland's pioneers. The earliest stone dates back to 1833.

The Roselawn Memorial Gardens is the newest cemetery in the township and can be found on Maitland Road just north of the second concession. Its 25 acres is laid out similar to a park with no tombstones and is well cared for. Markers that lie flush with the ground record the names, birth and death dates of those interred there.
