Productive Ontario East Municipalities Conference in Cornwall
Augusta Matters by Mayor Doug Malanka
On September 11th, 12th and 13th, the Deputy Mayor, CAO/Treasurer and I attended the Ontario East Municipalities Conference (OEMC) held in Cornwall. This is a local conference where daily commuting saves on the cost of the conference and one that provides members of Council and staff an opportunity to meet with senior Ontario government officials to hear and obtain explanations about new legislation and programs and to provide feedback. The Conference also permits networking with other municipalities on issues and visiting a manufacturers/service exhibition. Topics of particular interest for me were sessions regarding tourism and the programs and activities of local Conservation Authorities regarding the flooding that has occurred along the St. Lawrence River in 2017 and 2019. I also attended helpful sessions regarding effective and meaningful indigenous engagement, the role of the Independent Electricity System Operators (IESO) and how the IESO work with Municipalities to ensure electrical needs are met including powering industry. I also attended an informative session by the Frank Cowan Company on understanding and managing municipal risk. During lunch and other breaks, important contacts were made with members of other municipalities f or discussing common issues and with Ministry officials for discussing programs. All and all, a very productive conference.
On another subject, it was my pleasure last Thursday, September 12th to participate in the official opening ceremonies of the Spencerville Fair and to participate in the Spencerville Fair Parade on Saturday, September 14th. Fortunately, the rain held off and I had an opportunity to enjoy the Fair with family.
