Augusta Township Council approves 4 year Police Services Agreement with OPP

Augusta Matters by Mayor Doug Malanka

In August of 2014, the Province approved a billing formula whereby the 324 OPP‑serviced municipalities in Ontario pay for Base Services and for Calls for Service.  Base Service expenses are defined as covering a base level of infrastructure, supervision, administration and “sufficient front‑line policing”.  Base Services costs are estimated to cover 60% of what a Municipality pays for policing and are apportioned based on a per property basis for households including seasonal, commercial and industrial properties in a municipality.  Calls for Service billing are estimated to be approximately 40% of the overall cost a municipality pays for policing and costs are related to requests for police assistance beyond basic policing that involve attendance by an Officer in a Municipality.  Calls for Service.  Augusta Township’s current agreement with OPP for policing services expires on December 31, 2018 and the alternate to renewing its agreement with the OPP for police services, would be for the Township to establish a Police Department on its own or in partnership with another or other contiguous municipalities.  As this option is not being pursued.  Augusta Township council approved at its regular meeting of Council on Tuesday, December 11th, 2018, a motion that authorized the Mayor and Clerk to enter into a four year agreement with the OPP for the provision of police services effective January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2022.  According to OPP Municipal Police Billing Statement the total estimated cost for policing in Augusta Township for 2019 will increase by $11,675 or 1.1% from $1023,254 to $1,034,929 off-set by a 2017 year‑end adjustment $10,718 for a net billing of $1,024,211 for 2019.   The Calls for Service costs are estimated and will be adjusted based on actual costs.  Council agreed to a 4 year term to align with the term of Council on recommendation of Staff.

On other matters related to the Christmas season, please note the following.  The Township office will be open on December 24, 2018 from 8:30 am to noon and then be closed until Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019 when it will open at 8:30 am and close at 4:30 pm.  The Waste Transfer Stations will be closed on December 25th and 26th, 2018 and January 1st, 2019.  Augusta’s Public Library will be closed on December 24th, 25th, 26th, 28th and 31st, 2018 and will be open on December 27th from 1 pm to 8 pm, December 29th from 9am to 1 pm and January 2nd, 2019 from 9 am to 1 pm.

As this may be the last Column before Christmas, I’d like to wish residents of Augusta Township and surrounding municipalities a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!!  Please drive carefully and not impaired or distracted in any way.
